Mother Baby Pack
Antiretroviral medicine kit to prevent mother-to-child HIV transmission / Presented at Hotel Marigny on 1 December 2010, the 23rd World AIDS Day
Mother Baby Pack is an antiretroviral medicine kit to avert mother-to-child HIV transmission. UNICEF has teamed up with the WHO, UNITAID and other organisations. In July 2010, 30,000 packs are shipped in four African countries : Lesotho, Zambia, Cameroon and Kenya. They cover 20% of the requirements. The three colours distinguish the antiretroviral (tri-therapy and by-therapy) treatments for each phase: blue for pregnancy, yellow for labour and pink for breastfeeding. The treatment starts during the 14th week of pregnancy and stretches through to the breastfeeding phase. It costs 50 and cuts the risk of virus transmission from 40% to less than 5%.
