The Millennium Development Goals were created in 2000 at the initiative of the United Nations 189 member states signed a Millennium Declaration. They set a target date of 2015 to achieve the following eight goals in the poorest countries:

1) Eradicate extreme poverty and hunger
2) Achieve universal primary education
3) Promote gender equality and empower women
4) Reduce child mortality
5) Improve maternal health
6) Combat HIV/AIDS, malaria and other diseases
7) Ensure environmental sustainability
8) Develop a global partnership for development

This North-South partnership has significantly increased the number of people with access to antiretroviral therapy: from 2003 to 2010, it grew more than tenfold. 5 million people now benefit from therapy, 42% of the 8.8 million people needing treatment for HIV.
