Hôtel Carlyle
Carla at the Carlyle: her New York hotel
Located on the Upper East Side, the Carlyle hotel is still famous for being the love nest of Marilyn Monroe and John F. Kennedy. This is where the actress came after singing her famous “Happy Birthday Mr President” tribute on 19 May 1962 at Madison Square Garden, taking the long secret corridors between the venue and the Art Deco hotel. Designed by architects Ben & Prince, the hotel, named after Scottish writer Thomas Carlyle, opened in 1930. It is one of Carla Bruni’s favorite stop-offs in New York. The hotel no doubt has other stories to tell – Woody Allen and his jazz band have been playing there regularly for the past ten years or so.
