Ambassador for the Global Fund
The role of Carla Bruni-Sarkozy
Carla Bruni-Sarkozy is Ambassador for the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, and her particular task is the protection of mothers and children from HIV/AIDS. Priority is given to prevention of transmission of the virus from mother to child during pregnancy. According to a 2008 UNAIDS report, over 90% of children with HIV are infected by their parents. These transmission methods can be eradicated.
The Global Fund finances programs to fight AIDS worldwide with the aim of reducing the burden on mothers and children. The most vulnerable populations are found in Africa. It implements screening and counseling programs and prevention programs for mother to child transmission of the virus, treatment and healthcare programs for orphans and children and all those who are in need of them. Mrs. Bruni-Sarkozy’s function is to highlight the need to promote such actions on a broader scale worldwide.
