Gammarth orphanage
Orphanage / Tunisia visit April 2008
The first Village d’Enfants SOS was created in Gammarth, 17 kilometers from Tunis, close to the historic site of Carthage. Two others have since been created in Siliana and Marhès. Benefiting from the concern of President Zine el-Abidine Ben Ali and his wife, the project will soon add a fourth village in Akouda, in the region of Sousse. The aim of this Tunisian charity is to take charge of children who are orphans, abandoned or deprived. The Gammarth village was inaugurated in March 1984 and has ten houses that welcome 80 children aged 6 months to 18 years, looked after by ten “mothers” and five “aunties”, ensuring their social integration. This was the village Carla Bruni-Sarkozy visited on April 29, 2008 during her visit to Tunisia. Accompanied by Sarra Jarraya, Minister for Women, Family, Childhood and Elderly Affairs, she visited the family houses, the girls’ residence and the social and educational spaces. She signed autographs and the guest book and sung a few notes of the Enrico Macias song, Enfants de tous pays.
