Audiovisual in prison

Based in Nancy, France, the community organization Les Yeux de l’ouïe was founded in 1996. On the initiative of audiovisual distributors and artists, it aims to promote other forms of writing. Alternative forms. Three years earlier, the main players in the organization organized the dissemination of original works at Metz prison with the project Murs d’images. The programming welcomed an “outside” audience. This was a success, and the following year they organized the Apéro Video at the cultural center in Metz. Les Yeux de l’ouïe is a bridge between the world of prison and civil society. It is a forum that welcomes community organizations and individuals, video makers and artists from the Lorraine and Ile-de-France regions. Supported by the French State (Ministries of Culture and Justice) and Regions, this collective also offers workshops and creation projects as well as a night of programming each year, Les Yeux la nuit. Since 1999,  the association has led the workshop En quête d’autres regards at the La Santé prison in Paris. “This work is part of a global aim to provide access to image and audio culture to the greatest number and the inclusion of prisons in a global cultural policy.” Anne Toussaint, one of its founding members, co-produced the film Ébullition, presented at Cannes in 2009.
