Image-movers/ Cinemas, a Life !(Passeurs d’images / Des cinés, une vie !)
In 1991 the National Cinematography Centre launched a programme in support of the government’s urban regeneration policies. Originally called A summer at the cinema, cinéville, it changed its name to Passeurs d’images (Image-movers) in 2007. However the goal of the association remains the same : to use the popular art of cinema to rebuild social fabric and encourage the integration of underprivileged neighbourhoods. The association has a network of 2,000 local organisations in 26 French regions (including the overseas territories) as well as Belgium (the town of Charleroi). With backing from various administrative departments, it offers a schedule of film-shows, practical workshops and training – all for a minimum fee in order to widen the cultural outreach as far as possible. In 2006, the association’s regional coordinators set up Des cinés, la vie ! (Cinemas, a Life !). This organisation aims to help young people who have been in trouble with the law. Run by the association Kyrnéa International, it offers cultural visits and activities to youngsters on parole, in special schools, foster-families or in detention. Accompanied by an educator, they watch films and then take part in debates. Each year they vote for their favourite film, and the winner is awarded a prize. The third Des cinés, la vie ! award was delivered on March 27 2009 in a ceremony at the Cinémathèque Française in Paris. From October 2008 to February 2009, nearly 2,000 young people, accompanied by cinema professionals and educators, had been shown 12 short films on the theme of cultural dialogue in a schedule drawn up by the Short Film Agency. The jury of 152 youngsters gave the award to Lyes Salem for the film Cousins.
