Ban Public
Created in 1999, the organization Ban Public aims to “communicate on issues linked to incarceration in Europe in order to help reintegration of detainees”. Its site (Ban Public) is used as a forum. With articles, editorials, testimonials and sketches, this information portal enables the link with prisoners to be maintained on their release from prison. Based on a sponsorship system, it consists of a network of former prisoners, journalists and community organizations. Helped by the Fondation du Grand Orient de France and supported by the Institut pour le développement de l’éthique et de l’action pour la solidarité (Ideas) and by the portal VeoSearch, Ban Public will, for example, put online work by a prisoner (puppet making), income from the sale of which will enable him to enroll in the second year of a Master’s in IT (Thierry). On August 18, 2009, Ban Public commented on the measures taken by French Justice Minister Michèle Alliot-Marie in favor of better training for prison staff concerning suicide prevention in prisons and also the generalization of tear-resistant sheets and blankets to prevent hanging. Charlotte Paradis, co-manager of the organization, told Figaro.fr: “Anything that can reinforce the humanization of prisons is a good thing.”
