Apprenti’ Bus

Mobile reading, writing and communication workshops

Since 1998, the nonprofit Sport dans la ville has been using sport as a tool for integration in 18 problem neighborhoods in the Rhône-Alpes region. To some of the 2,000 children playing football, basketball or rugby for free, it now offers mobile workshops in a bus as a fun way of getting to grips with reading, arithmetic and oral and written expression. This is the Apprenti’Bus (the learning bus), which offers communication workshops on the theme of sport and sports vocabulary. Every evening from 5 pm  to 7.30 pm, the Apprenti’bus visits a different neighborhood and welcomes 96 young people from 9 to 13 (for the 2009-2010 season) to enjoy quizzes, spelling games, charades and word games and the opportunity to edit a quarterly newspaper, Le Petit Journal de l’Apprenti’Bus, with reports and interviews created by the group. The initiative is supported by the Jean-Luc Lagardère foundation, the Française des Jeux foundation, the Veolia Environnement foundation, the Accor foundation and the financial foundation of l’Échiquier.
