Amara (Fadela)

Secretary of State in charge of policy for cities. Guest on the Grand Journal News program (Canal +). September 2008

Fadela Amara was appointed Secretary of State in charge of policy for cities in June 2007.  She remains a symbol of diversity within the Fillon government.   Born in 1964 in Clermont-Ferrand, this daughter of Kabyl parents close to the FLN (Algeria) is known for having founded the organization Ni putes ni soumises (“Neither whores nor submissive”) in 2003. The organization was launched  in support of Sohane Benziane (aged 17), who died after being  set on fire near the trashcans of the Balzac housing project in Vitry-sur-Seine, close to Paris. The movement is part of Fadela Amara’s fight against the disintegration of the social fabric, community ghettoization and the rise of fundamentalism calling into question the place of girls in the “hoods”. The Secretary of State was one of Carla Bruni’s interviewees as guest-editor of the Grand Journal (Canal +) on September 18, 2008.
